Abel Tasman Part - 3

We drove up the extremely curvy Takaka Hill road.  At the top, we walked the trail to the very top of the hill for some fantastic 360 degree views.  The marble rock covering the hill has been sculpted by acid rain.  This area was used to film a couple of scenes in the Lord of the Ring.

Again we drove over and down Takaka Hill Road and north to Farewell Spit.  Farewell Spit is internationally protected, as it is “one of a chain of important wetlands around the world where migratory shorebirds visit to rest on their long-distance journey.” (DOC)

Wharariki Beach is a must see for any visit to New Zealand.  Be sure to visit at low tide, so you can explore the caves and get out to see the island that is home to many fur seal pups.  This beach is a truly memorable place.

It took a little longer to get home.
End of a long line.
