Northland Part 3

Cape Reinga

We set off early to drive up the long peninsula to Cape Reinga (one of the most northerly points in New Zealand).  We walked the Cape Reinga Coastal Path starting from Taputaputa Bay (1st photo) and stopped to have our lunch (2nd photo – notice the lighthouse in the upper left).

The lighthouse is above the place where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet.  The collision of the waters is clearly visible.  The Maori believe that it is at this point that your soul leaves the earth to head for the land of their ancestors.

Brian however is California dreamin’.

The last couple of days have been windy and warm with light showers.  The air is humid, but comfortable.  We have been enjoying a funky little fishing village called Manganoui.  They even serve some good vegetarian fare.  We discovered Hokey Pokey ice cream, a New Zealand favorite.  It is vanilla ice cream with butterscotch crunchy bits.

Most evenings we walk Coopers Beach.  This photo was taken about 8 PM in January, imagine that.

We also wanted to mention on any of the postings you can double click on any picture to get full size photos.
